Spicy BBQ Cauliflower Wings By Sage on Sat, 09/14/2019 - 15:26 It’s game day! You know what that means - wings! Football Sundays aren’t complete without some spicy bbq wings. Ours are made with cauliflower and served up with some homemade biscuits and caesar salad (all vegan). Make these up for your next Superbowl Party and you’ll be sure to win MVP. Caution: This recipe uses hot oil! Please be careful to prevent burns. Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 30 mins Difficulty Level: Medium Ingredients: 1 cup All-Purpose Flour ½ tsp Salt ½ tsp Pepper 1 tsp Chilli Powder 1 tsp Onion Powder 1 tsp Garlic Powder 1 ½ tbsp Nutritional Yeast ¾ cup BBQ Sauce (Ensure Vegan - I use Stubb’s Original Bar-B-Q Sauce) ¼ cup Chili Garlic Sauce ¼ cup Unsweetened Almond Milk 1 Medium Cauliflower, cut into large florets 3-4 cups Vegetable Oil or other oil for frying Directions: Measure and mix all dry ingredients in a small bowl. In a separate bowl, add all the wet ingredients and whisk well. Using one hand, dip cauliflower floret in wet bbq mixture. Then, place the floret in the flour mixture. Use your dry hand to cover the floret in flour. Dip the same cauliflower floret in the bbq mixture followed by the flour mixture again (2 times total). Set the coated floret aside. *Note: Make sure to keep one hand designated to wet ingredients and one to dry at this step - it’s easy to get messy!* Repeat step 3 with all cauliflower florets. On the stove top, heat 3-4 cups of oil in a 3-quart frying pan over medium-high heat. The oil should be about ¼ inch deep. *Note: the oil gets hot pretty quickly (about 5 minutes). Cover the frying pan to ensure you don’t get burned by the hot oil!* While oil is heating, line a baking tray with paper towels. Place cooling trays on top of lined baking sheet for the cauliflower to cool once fried. Test temperature of oil by gently dropping cauliflower floret into the frying pan. If the cauliflower immediately begins to sizzle, the oil is ready. Add cauliflower florets until frying pan is full. Make sure that florets are not touching and that you have room to flip them. Fry florets for about 5 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cauliflower is done when it has a dark golden color. *Note: It is very difficult to over cook these wings. The longer they cook, the crispier the shell and softer the cauliflower becomes.* Place cooked cauliflower florets on the cooling tray. Repeat until all cauliflower wings are cooked. As much as I love science, I do not have a calorimeter in my kitchen and am unable to determine exactly how much oil the cauliflower uptakes.** Tags vegan dinner vegan junk food Category Dinner Comments View the discussion thread.
